Walter Murray

Walter Murray

20 June 2010

Walter Murray was cited on James Murray’s wedding certificate as his father in 1890. Walter also registered the birth of James in 1855. On Walter’s death registration in 1907 his parents are recorded ar William Murray and Margaret Turnbull.

However there is some confusion regarding Walter’s forename.  The only child that his parents appear to have had is a “John Murray” .The parish register of Minto records:

“William Murray Hind at Deanfoot and Margaret Turnbull his wife had a son born on the 7th day of October 1824 and baptized shortly after named John”

It is possible that they had a Walter born later (more in keeping with Walter’s claimed age at the census - though these vary significantly by several years each decade).

There are also two records of a Margaret Turnbull being buried shortly after in 1828-1829 in Kirkton parish.

Curiously in the 1851 census, while living in Denholm with a family of Catherine Dalgleish (wife) and children Catherine (daughter), William and Walter - the head of the family is recorded as “John Murray”.

Thereafter he is always referred to as “Walter”.  Walter was a very popular name in the area in the early 19th C - probably on account of Sir Walter Scott who lived and worked nearby.

In all census  [1851-1901] Walter/John is recorded as being of Lilliesleaf parish.
